Every four years more than 20.000 gymnasts from all over the world and of all ages come together for the World Gymnaestrada – the largest popular sporting event in the world. Neither judgment nor competition are at the center. It's more a friendly get together, a game and a shared presentation of one's performance by people from many different nations, religions and cultures.

In 1991 the mayor of Amsterdam aptly described the Gymnaestrada: „a week of Utopia, in which we are all happy“.
