Two artists from Vorarlberg – Ilona Griss-Schwärzler and Martin Stock (mashART) – presents on

their conceptual exhibit entitled „4-4-2“, on the occasion of the European Football Championship 2008.
The two artist are supported by „Kaufmann Bausysteme FC Bizau" and „Kienreich VfB Hohenems, who are both very active in the league of Vorarlberg.

Luminous colors, bursting lights, tangible layers, more or less abstractly presented are the nevertheless recognizable subjects from the world of the round leather in the different pieces of work. They are presented by the artists with a fondness in the proclaimed pragmatic play of a chain of fours.
Without exception the works are mixed media, created in a lavish process with archival inks on canvas, which then are hand finished individually, and abstract photo subjects which in turn are worked on with various materials in several layers.
Football as phemomenon
Football is one of the most popular and widely spread sports in th world. According to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) the sport is played by over 265 Mill. people in over 200 countries. One must understand football – so Griss and Stock – aside from the game as a positive cultural, historical, social, and especially a socio-political phenomenon. And this in the truest sense of the word, if one thinks about the experiences of Fritz Walter, recently chosen by the German Football Federation (DFB) as the „Golden Player“, in 1945 during his wartime captivity.
Aside from the experience or the flow of adrenalin during the game, football teams are for many people these days, weekend after weekend an important anchor to our roots in this globalizing world. Children, teenagers and adults find role models and as well as inspiration in this performance driven society. Football teams become more and more mirror images of our cultural and social structure.
No question: the European Football Championship will be THE event if the year 2008. For all of Europe, especially Austria and Switzerland. The phenomenon football will be able to connect once again – nations, people, regions, parties, ..... It is no wonder, when the successful team Griss and Stock acknowledge this event with an innovative exhibition. With a series in which everything revolves around the action on the playing field, which at the core puts the sport in the center of the artistic contemplation.
